Blessed Francis Seelos’ indefatigable work ethic in Baltimore led to an almost fatal illness; his survival led Redemptorist superiors to move him elsewhere in Maryland for less demanding duties. His close encounter with death only emboldened him to minister with even greater zeal. Impacted by a nation torn asunder in a civil war, and challenged by dynamics within his own Redemptorist Congregation, the concentrated years between 1857 and 1865 encapsulate Father Seelos at his busiest!
